quality academic program City School believes in partnerships
in order to make this provision available to as many students
as possible.
The
State of Educational Institutions in Austin
Many
of the best private independent schools in Austin are located
in the suburbs or outskirts of the city, making them inaccessible
to students in the inner city. Furthermore, the cost of those
elite educational programs limits their availability to the
urban and suburban wealthy. The urban underprivileged students
(those who qualify for the government free lunch program) are
at a great, disadvantage before they ever enter first grade.
Furthermore, most private schools do not welcome children with
learning disabilities, special gifting, or diverse learning
styles.
Why
City School Opened Its Doors
There
is one reason why City School opened its doors in 2002—to
create “no barriers” to quality, academic excellence
in the city of Austin. Thus, City School is different: (1) City
School seeks to address the issue of accessibility by its central
location in the city. This opens the door for cultural diversity
and removes a number of barriers. (2) City School seeks to address
the issue of affordability by offering tuition assistance for
any family that demonstrates the need. (3) City School seeks
to address the issue of student aptitude by offering an educational
program that encompasses children from varying academic abilities,
including those with needs of special education, regular education,
and gifted education. City School is committed to helping those
with dyslexia and other learning problems if the school believes
it can meet the student’s academic needs. This is a challenging
responsibility, but the call demands that we close the educational
disparity that presently exists. City School is a living token
of our national motto, e pluribus Unum.
Many
City School families can afford and pay full tuition. But the
school relies on tuition assistance to make the school accessible
to help us realize the vision of a school that is economically
accessible to all children.
City
School opened its doors in September 2002 with just 32 students.
Since then the school has nearly tripled its enrollment with
a significant number of urban underprivileged students taking
advantage of the school’s strong, measurable academic
programs.
ACADEMIC
DIVERSITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
RACIAL DIVERSITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE TO EQUALITY IN ADMISSIONS.
SOCIOECONOMIC DIVERSITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE TO FAMILY COMMITMENT.
CITY
SCHOOL
This
is clearly a vision that is being realized in Austin.
